Start at the top of this list. The first few causes are quick, safe checks. The later ones are mechanical problems that need a technician.
Stop and don't force it if you see a gap in a spring, a loose or snapped cable, a crooked door, or rollers out of the track. Those are the dangerous ones.
1. No power to the opener
Does the opener's light come on? If not:
- Make sure the opener is plugged in.
- Check the breaker panel.
- Look for a GFCI outlet (the kind with test and reset buttons) in the garage or nearby. They trip easily, and the opener may be on one.
2. The wall control is in lock or vacation mode
Many wall controls have a lock button or switch that disables remotes and keypads. If the remote does nothing but the wall button works, check for a lock light or icon and turn it off.
3. The remote battery is dead (or the remote lost its programming)

4. The safety sensors are blocked or misaligned
The two small photo-eye sensors near the floor mostly affect closing, but a sensor fault can make some openers act up. Wipe the lenses, clear anything in the beam, and check that both indicator lights are steady. On many openers, a flashing opener light points to a sensor problem.
5. A broken spring
This is one of the most common reasons a door suddenly won't open. Signs: a loud bang earlier, a gap in the spring above the door, or an opener that strains and lifts the door only a few inches. 6. A snapped or slipped cable
A cable hanging loose, or a door that's lower on one side, means a lift cable has failed. The door can jam or fall. Don't try to put the cable back. Cable repair
7. The door is off track
Rollers popped out of the track, a bent track, or a door leaning sideways will stop a door cold. Running the opener makes it worse. Off-track repair
8. A stripped opener gear or worn drive

Power's out and you need the door open?
If the springs and cables are intact and the door is closed, you can usually pull the red emergency-release cord and lift the door by hand. It should feel fairly light if the springs are working.
